Demonstrating Shape and Texture

Jim giving a throwing demonstration at the ACGA Clay & Glass Festival in Palo Alto.

At the ACGA show this weekend, I had the pleasure of being able to demonstrate a few techniques. I really enjoy giving these demos, and love having the opportunity to show pottery enthusiasts some of the tricks I’ve learned over the years. At this show, I highlighted how you can use basic shapes to make much more nuanced and bespoke pieces.

Check out these fish.

To make these fish designs, I apply a template, but then customize each fish by hand. The shape of the fish actually comes from how I throw the pot from the inside.

Throwing from the inside? Here’s how it works!

Jim shows how to maintain and stretch a design element by throwing only from the inside of a pot.
